Two seconds of rattle
on a cold start.

It happens when the car has sat overnight, it clears almost immediately, and it is extremely easy to decide it is nothing. On these engines it is the one warning you get.

Brief, cold,
and easy to dismiss.

The whole difficulty with this failure is that the early symptom is mild and intermittent, and the late symptom is a destroyed engine. There is not much in between.

"It rattles for a second when I first start it"
A metallic chatter from the front or the back of the engine, lasting one to three seconds after a cold start, then gone. Worse after the car has sat overnight or for a few days. If you have noticed this, do not wait to see whether it gets worse.
"The check engine light came on and went off"
Camshaft position correlation codes often set intermittently at first, and can clear themselves. A stored code that is no longer illuminating a light is still a stored code, and it is still telling you the cam and crank are not where they should be relative to one another.
"It feels slightly down on power"
Timing that has drifted from spec costs performance and economy well before it costs you the engine. Owners frequently attribute it to fuel or to the car getting older.
"It cranks longer than it used to"
A chain that has gone slack allows a small amount of movement at rest, and the engine takes marginally longer to find itself on startup.

The tensioner
lets go at rest.

The chain is kept taut by a hydraulically pressurised tensioner. With the engine running and oil pressure up, it holds correctly. The problem is what happens when the engine is switched off.

Pressure Bleeds Down Overnight
On the earlier tensioner designs used across the four-cylinder 2.0T family, hydraulic pressure can bleed away while the car sits. On the next cold start there is a brief moment before oil pressure builds during which the chain is slack — and that is the rattle you hear. Each occurrence allows a small amount of movement against the guides.
Guides Wear, Then Timing Drifts
The plastic guides wear from that repeated slap. As they wear, the chain gains slack even when the tensioner is working, and cam timing drifts away from where the engine management expects it to be. That is when correlation codes appear, and it is the point at which the problem is measurable rather than audible.
Why The Location Makes It Expensive
On several of these engines the chain drive is at the back of the engine, against the bulkhead, rather than at the front. Access is the dominant cost of the job — the parts themselves are not the expensive part. That is also precisely why it is worth catching early: the labour is much the same whether you are replacing a tensioner or rebuilding a valvetrain, so the cheap version of this job is the one done before the chain jumps.
What Happens If It Jumps
These are interference engines. If the chain skips far enough, valves and pistons occupy the same space, and the repair stops being a timing job and becomes an engine. This is the reason we treat a cold-start rattle as urgent rather than as something to monitor.

Measure the timing,
do not guess at it.

A rattle is a symptom that several things can cause. Before recommending a job of this size we establish that the timing has actually deviated and by how much.

How Level 1 Testing Confirms It
With ODIS we read complete fault memory including stored and intermittent camshaft correlation codes, and we look at live camshaft timing deviation values against specification with the engine running and warm. We check which revision of the tensioner is currently fitted, because a car that has already had the updated part and is still rattling is telling a different story. We listen at cold start rather than relying on a description. That is a Level 1 Testing session at $285 flat, and it distinguishes a tensioner from a stretched chain from something else entirely.
The Repair
The updated tensioner is fitted — the revised design exists precisely because the original one failed this way. If the chain has stretched or the guides have worn, they are replaced as a set rather than piecemeal, because a new tensioner working against worn guides is a short-lived repair. Timing is set and verified to factory specification, and we re-check live deviation values afterwards to confirm the engine agrees.
Why OEM Matters On This Job
The point of this repair is the revised part. Fitting an aftermarket tensioner that copies the original geometry reproduces the original failure, and given that the labour on this job substantially exceeds the parts cost, that is an expensive way to save a small amount. Chains and guides are dimensionally critical. We fit OEM or genuine manufacturer-specification components and back the work with a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty.
