Common Repairs — Lux AutoHause

The jobs these cars
actually need.

European platforms fail in known ways at known mileages. These are the repairs we do most often, written up properly — what the symptom feels like from the driver's seat, why it happens on that particular engine, how we confirm it before quoting, and what the repair involves.

Start with the symptom,
not the diagnosis.

Each page opens with what owners actually say when they call, because almost nobody rings a shop already knowing which component has failed. If something below sounds like your car, the page will tell you what is likely happening and how we would confirm it — every one of these starts with a Level 1 Testing session at $285 flat rather than a guess. Buying rather than fixing? The pre-purchase inspection is $250 flat and checks for most of what is on this page.

BMW
common repairs.

Burning oil smell from your BMW? Valve cover gasket and oil filter housing leaks look identical and are constantly confused. We find which one it actually is before replacing parts.
BMW N63 twin-turbo V8 burning oil, smoking on startup, or ticking? The hot-vee layout drives valve stem seal, timing chain and turbo line failures. We confirm which before quoting.
"Lifetime fluid" means the life of the warranty, not the life of your car. ZF 6HP and 8HP fluid service done to spec, filled at the correct fluid temperature, adaptations reset.
A new BMW battery has to be registered to the car. Skip it and the charging system keeps treating the new battery as an old one — short battery life and scattered unrelated faults.
Moving your BMW off run-flats gives a better ride, more tire choice and lower cost. It also removes your ability to limp home, and most run-flat BMWs carry no spare. Read this first.
What a BMW star, Mercedes MO, Audi AO or Porsche N-spec actually means, when the marked tire is worth the premium, and when a quality equivalent at the same specification is the better buy.

Audi
common repairs.

A brief rattle on cold start is the warning an Audi timing chain tensioner gives you before it stops giving warnings. We confirm cam timing deviation with factory data, not by ear.
Direct injection means no fuel washes the intake valves, so deposits build up. We borescope first and show you the actual valves before recommending walnut blasting.

Volkswagen
common repairs.

Jerky low-speed shifts or shudder from a stop in a DSG-equipped VW? Wet-clutch DSG needs fluid and filter on interval. We read the transmission module and clutch adaptations first.
Many later VW engines add port injection specifically to stop intake valve carbon, and do not need cleaning at all. We borescope and show you before recommending anything.

Mercedes-Benz
common repairs.

Mercedes sitting low overnight or showing an AIRMATIC warning? One leaking air strut is what kills the compressor. Replacing the compressor without finding the leak kills the new one too.
Mercedes V6 balance shaft and V8 idler gear wear produces camshaft correlation codes and a startup rattle. Engine serial number determines whether your car is in the affected range.

Porsche
common repairs.

IMS bearing risk on M96 and M97 Boxster, Cayman and 911 engines is real and widely exaggerated. Oil filter inspection tells you a great deal, and the sensible time to act is during a clutch job.

Volvo
common repairs.

Several Volvo oil leaks appearing at once usually share one cause: a blocked oil trap. Crankcase pressure has to go somewhere, and it leaves through your seals. Fix the cause first.
