with one real catch.

Converting a BMW from run-flats to conventional tires is one of the most satisfying changes you can make to how the car rides. It also removes something, and anyone recommending it without telling you what is not being straight with you.

The ride is
why people call.

Nobody rings a shop about tire construction in the abstract. They ring because of how the car feels.

"It rides like a cart"
Sharp, brittle response over expansion joints, frost heave and broken pavement — and the Palouse supplies all three generously. On a car otherwise engineered for refinement it feels wrong, and it is the most common reason owners start looking into this.
"It is loud on the highway"
A stiff sidewall transmits road roar into the cabin that a conventional sidewall absorbs. It is most obvious on coarse chip-seal, which describes a good deal of road in this region.
"They cost how much?"
Run-flats generally cost more per tire than the conventional equivalent, and the range of choice is narrower — particularly in winter fitments and in the less common sizes.
"My tire shop says they cannot get them"
Availability in some sizes is genuinely limited, which occasionally forces the decision rather than inviting it.

A different tire,
doing a different job.

A run-flat carries a heavily reinforced sidewall so it can support the weight of the car with no air in it for a limited distance at reduced speed. That reinforcement is the entire product, and it is also the source of everything owners dislike.

Ride Quality
The sidewall is a suspension component. A conventional sidewall flexes and absorbs impacts that a reinforced one transmits directly into the chassis and into you. This is the change people notice within the first mile, and it is usually larger than they expect.
Noise
Less structure in the sidewall means less of the road surface arriving in the cabin as noise. On a long highway drive the difference is meaningful rather than marginal.
Choice And Cost
The conventional market is far larger. More manufacturers, more compounds, a much better selection of genuine winter tires, and generally a lower price for a comparable-quality tire. If you want a specific tire for how you actually drive, conventional gives you the option.
Repairability — A Property Of The Tire
Conventional tires can generally be repaired after a simple tread puncture; run-flats generally cannot, and a run-flat that has been driven on while deflated is usually finished. That is a real characteristic of the tire and worth knowing when you weigh this up. To be completely clear about our own scope: we do not perform puncture repair. We do tire replacement, changeover, balancing, TPMS and alignment. If you take a nail, you will need a tire shop that patches, and that is not us — we would rather you knew that now than discovered it on a Saturday.

Most of these cars
have no spare.

This is the part that gets left out, and it is the part that actually matters. Read it before you decide.

There Is Probably Nothing In The Boot
BMW fitted run-flats specifically so that a spare wheel would be unnecessary, and then deleted the spare, the jack and the tools to save weight and space. Many of these cars do not even have a spare well to put one in. The run-flat was the redundancy — take it away without replacing it and a flat tire on US-95 at night means a tow, not a roadside change.
So Replace The Redundancy
A conversion should include a plan. Either a tire mobility and inflator kit carried in the car, or a compact spare with the jack and tools to use it where the vehicle can physically accommodate one. This is not an upsell — it is the thing that makes the conversion sensible rather than reckless, and we will talk it through rather than hand you a car with no fallback.
Winter Changes The Calculation
Losing mobility matters more in January on the Palouse than in July. Cold, distance between towns, and roads where stopping on the shoulder is genuinely hazardous all argue for having a real answer to a flat rather than a theoretical one.
It Is Not Always The Right Call
If you drive alone at night, cover long distances between towns, or simply value being able to keep moving on a deflated tire more than you value ride comfort, staying on run-flats is a perfectly rational choice — and we fit run-flats too. We are not trying to talk you into a conversion. We are trying to make sure you choose with the whole picture in front of you.

Mounting And Balancing
Tires mounted and balanced in house. We are equipped for run-flat fitments as well, so whether you are converting away from them, staying on them, or fitting a winter set, the work happens here rather than being sent out.
TPMS
We service and program tire pressure monitoring, and we supply and program new sensors where they are needed. A changeover generally requires the system to be reset or relearned so the car reads the new wheels correctly — a conversion is not finished while a warning light is still on.
Alignment
Worth checking whenever tires are replaced, and worth doing properly if the car has been running on a bad set or has met a pothole hard enough to make you think about it. Alignment is done in house. Fitting an expensive new set of tires to a car that is out of alignment is how you buy the next set early.
What We Do Not Do
We do not repair punctures — no patches and no plugs. We do replacement and changeover. Being clear about that up front is worth more to you than a longer service list would be.
