BMW Battery Registration
On a modern BMW, fitting the battery is roughly half the job. If the replacement is not registered to the vehicle, the charging system carries on managing it as though it were the worn-out battery you removed.
The Symptom
These complaints almost always arrive after a battery has already been replaced — often correctly, and often somewhere that did not register it.
Why It Happens
BMW uses an intelligent battery sensor at the negative terminal and a power management strategy that varies charging voltage according to the battery's type, capacity, state of charge, temperature and estimated age. It is a genuinely good system, and it depends entirely on the car knowing what battery is fitted.
What We Do
A surprising number of the cars that arrive here for a battery do not need one, and some that need one have a different underlying problem.
