Air suspension failures cascade. A small leak that nobody notices makes the compressor work far harder than it was designed to, and the compressor is what fails visibly — which is why it is so often the only thing replaced.

It usually starts
overnight.

The early stage of this failure is entirely invisible while you are driving, because the system compensates for it in seconds every time you start the car.

"It is sitting low in the morning"
One corner down, or the whole car squatting, first thing — and back to normal a minute or two after starting. That is the system doing its job and masking a leak. It is the earliest and cheapest point at which this can be caught.
"AIRMATIC — visit workshop"
The explicit warning. Often accompanied by the ride height locking at a fixed setting or the car refusing to raise. By this point the system has decided something is outside its ability to compensate for.
"I can hear the pump running a lot"
The compressor cycling more often and for longer than it used to, sometimes audible from inside. This is the single most useful early warning, and it is the one owners most often mention only after being asked.
"The ride has gone hard, or the car leans"
A strut that cannot hold pressure changes how the car sits and how it takes a corner. It is also a safety matter rather than a comfort one once it reaches this stage.

One leak takes
the whole system with it.

The failure sequence on these systems is consistent enough to be predictable, and understanding it is what stops you paying for the same repair twice.

The Air Springs Age
The flexible rubber bellows on each strut is a wear component. Over years of flexing, heat, cold and road salt it develops porosity or a small split, usually at the folds. It does not blow out; it seeps. The car keeps up with the loss easily at first and you never know.
The Compressor Pays For It
That compressor was specified to top up a healthy system occasionally. Feeding a leak, it runs far more often and for far longer, gets hot, and wears out early. When it finally fails, the car goes down and stays down — so the compressor looks like the fault, because it is the part that stopped working.
Why Replacing Only The Compressor Fails
This is the expensive mistake, and we see it regularly. A new compressor fitted to a system that is still leaking is put on exactly the same duty cycle that destroyed the first one, and it fails in turn. The compressor was a symptom. The leak is the fault. Any honest repair on one of these cars begins by finding the leak.
The Supporting Cast
The valve block that directs air to each corner, the air dryer that keeps moisture out of the system, and the ride height sensors that tell the module where the car is sitting all fail in their own right and all produce overlapping symptoms. A moisture-contaminated system caused by a saturated dryer damages components downstream of it.

Find the leak,
then fix the damage.

In that order, always. The suspension module holds most of the answer and it is not visible to a generic scan tool.

How Level 1 Testing Confirms It
With XENTRY we read the suspension control module directly: stored faults, ride height sensor values corner by corner, and compressor run-time data that shows how hard it has been working. We pressure-test the system and isolate individual corners to locate the leak rather than infer it, check the valve block and dryer condition, and verify the ride height sensors are reporting truthfully — a lying sensor produces a car that rides wrongly with nothing mechanically leaking at all. That is a Level 1 Testing session at $285 flat.
The Repair
Leaking struts are replaced, generally in pairs across an axle so the car sits and rides evenly. The compressor is replaced if it has been damaged by overwork, and the dryer with it. The valve block is addressed if it is passing air. Then ride height is calibrated with the factory tool — this is not optional and it is not something that can be set by eye. An uncalibrated system rides at the wrong height, wears tires unevenly, and can log new faults of its own.
Why OEM Matters On This Job
Air struts are the clearest case on this entire site. Inexpensive aftermarket air springs are a well-known repeat failure, and when one fails it takes the new compressor with it exactly as the original did — so the saving is spent twice over, plus labour. This is a component where the specification of the rubber and the quality of the crimped seals is the entire product. OEM or genuine manufacturer-specification parts only, with a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty on the work.
