BMW ZF Transmission Service
BMW marked the ZF automatic as a sealed, filled-for-life unit. In practice that means filled for the life of the warranty. The fluid degrades like any other fluid, and the parts it protects are among the most expensive in the car.
The Symptom
A ZF box gives you warning, and the warnings are easy to explain away for a long time before they become undeniable.
Why It Happens
Automatic transmission fluid is a hydraulic medium, a lubricant, a coolant and a friction modifier all at once. It runs hot, it shears, and it collects the wear material that the clutches and gears shed. None of that stops because the manual does not list a service interval.
What We Do
A ZF fluid service done casually is worse than not doing it, and this is one of the jobs where the difference between a correct and an approximate procedure is entirely invisible until it is not.
