The fuel never
touches the valves.

Direct injection is why these engines make the power and economy they do. It is also why the backs of the intake valves have nothing washing them clean, and why deposits accumulate there over tens of thousands of miles.

It arrives
gradually.

Carbon build-up is not an event. It is a slow restriction, and most owners adapt to it without noticing until something crosses a threshold.

"It idles rough, especially cold"
Uneven idle in the first minutes after start, sometimes with a slight shake through the car. Heavy deposits disturb airflow into the cylinder unevenly, and cylinders end up filling differently from one another.
"It hesitates when I accelerate"
A flat spot or stumble under load, particularly from low revs. Restricted intake ports limit how much air the engine can actually draw in.
"Misfire codes keep coming back"
Frequently on one or two specific cylinders. New coils and plugs help briefly or not at all, because the ignition system was never the problem.
"Economy has quietly got worse"
Rarely the complaint people arrive with, usually confirmed once they think about it. Restricted breathing shows up in fuel consumption before it shows up as a warning light.

A consequence
of the design.

On a port-injected engine, fuel is sprayed into the intake port and continuously washes over the back of the intake valve. That fuel is an excellent solvent and it keeps the valve clean as a side effect. Direct injection sprays fuel straight into the combustion chamber instead, which is what makes it efficient — and it removes that washing action entirely.

Where The Deposits Come From
Crankcase ventilation routes oil vapour back into the intake, and on engines with exhaust gas recirculation there is soot in there too. That mixture lands on a valve running at several hundred degrees, and it bakes into a hard, layered deposit. Nothing removes it, so it accumulates for the life of the engine.
It Is Mileage, Not Neglect
This is not a sign that a car has been treated badly. It is an inherent characteristic of the design, and it appears on well-maintained cars on schedule. Audi service intervals are relatively long, which does not help, but the fundamental cause is the injection layout rather than the oil change history.
What Makes It Worse
A crankcase ventilation system that is not working correctly pushes considerably more oil vapour into the intake and accelerates the whole process. Short journeys and extended idling contribute. If we clean an engine and the PCV system is the reason it fouled quickly, we will tell you, because otherwise you are buying the same job again.
Which Engines Actually Need It
Not all of them, and this matters. Later VW Group engines add port injection alongside direct injection specifically to address this, and those engines keep their intake valves substantially cleaner. If your car has both systems, you very probably do not need this service, and we would rather tell you that than sell it to you.

Look at the valves
before quoting.

Carbon cleaning is one of the most oversold services in European servicing. We are not willing to recommend it on the basis of mileage alone.

How Level 1 Testing Confirms It
We put a borescope into the intake and photograph the actual valves in your actual engine, so the decision is made on evidence rather than on a rule of thumb. Alongside that we read fault memory with ODIS, look at long and short term fuel trims, and check misfire counters per cylinder to see whether the pattern matches what the borescope shows. We assess crankcase ventilation function at the same time. That is a Level 1 Testing session at $285 flat, and you will see the pictures.
The Repair
Walnut shell blasting is the method that works. The intake manifold comes off, each intake port is sealed and blasted with crushed walnut shell media, and the debris is extracted under vacuum as it is removed — the media is hard enough to strip baked carbon and soft enough not to damage the valve or the port. Chemical treatments poured into the fuel or the intake do not meaningfully touch deposits of this kind, whatever the packaging says. If crankcase ventilation is contributing, we address that as part of the same job rather than leaving it to refoul what we just cleaned.
Why OEM Matters On This Job
The manifold has to come off, which means intake gaskets and seals are disturbed and replaced on reassembly. Those are exactly the parts where an imperfect fit produces a vacuum leak — and a vacuum leak after a carbon service produces a rough idle, which is the symptom you came in with. Correct-specification gaskets are what make this a job that gets finished. Every repair carries a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty.
