Volkswagen Carbon Cleaning

Half of these cars
do not need it.

Carbon cleaning is sold on mileage far more often than it is sold on evidence. On several VW engines it is a genuine and necessary service. On several others it is close to pointless, and which one you own is knowable before you spend anything.

Which injection
does your engine use?

This is the question that decides everything else, and it is the one most rarely asked before a carbon service is quoted.

Direct Injection Only
Fuel is sprayed straight into the cylinder, so nothing ever washes the back of the intake valve. Oil vapour from the crankcase ventilation system lands there instead and bakes on. These engines accumulate genuine, measurable deposits over tens of thousands of miles, and on these engines cleaning does real good.
Port And Direct Injection Together
Later engines in the VW Group four-cylinder family add port injectors alongside the direct injectors. That was not done for power — it was done substantially to solve this problem, because port-injected fuel washes the intake valve the way it always did. If your engine has both systems, its intake valves stay far cleaner and a carbon service is very unlikely to be what your car needs.
So We Establish That First
Before anything else we identify what is actually in your car, and then we look at it. If you own a later GTI, Golf R, Jetta, Tiguan or Passat with combined injection and someone has quoted you a carbon clean on mileage alone, get a second opinion. It may well not be your problem.

What sends people
looking for it.

The symptoms overlap heavily with several other faults, which is exactly why the diagnosis has to be visual rather than inferential.

"Rough idle and misfires"
Especially cold, often on specific cylinders, often with codes that return after new plugs and coils. Restricted and unevenly restricted ports make cylinders fill differently.
"It hesitates and feels flat"
A stumble under load from low revs. On a tuned car this is noticed much sooner, because a modified engine is asking for more airflow than a stock one and is less tolerant of a restriction.
"But it could also be several other things"
A vacuum leak, a failing high-pressure fuel pump, coil or injector faults, and a crankcase ventilation failure all produce a broadly similar set of complaints. Carbon is one candidate on that list, not the default answer.

A photograph
of your valves.

We would rather show you the inside of your engine than describe it, and we would much rather tell you that you do not need a service than sell you one you do not.

How Level 1 Testing Confirms It
A borescope into the intake port to see and photograph the actual valves, plus fault memory across every module with ODIS, fuel trims, and per-cylinder misfire counters. We check the crankcase ventilation system, because a failed PCV is both a cause of accelerated fouling and an independent cause of the same symptoms. If the borescope shows clean valves, we keep looking rather than clean them anyway. That is a Level 1 Testing session at $285 flat.
The Repair
Where cleaning is genuinely warranted, walnut shell blasting is the method that works: intake manifold off, each port sealed and blasted with crushed walnut media, debris extracted under vacuum as it comes away. The media strips baked carbon without damaging valve or port. Fuel additives and intake sprays do not remove deposits of this hardness, regardless of what the bottle claims. If crankcase ventilation is contributing, it gets fixed in the same job — otherwise the engine simply refouls.
Why OEM Matters On This Job
Taking the manifold off means intake gaskets and seals get replaced, and those are precisely the parts where an approximate fit creates a vacuum leak. A vacuum leak after a carbon service reproduces the rough idle you came in to fix, which is a frustrating way to end an expensive job. Correct-specification gaskets, and a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty on the work.
